Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.
Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining microfinance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending. For example:
Aurelio Gutierrez, 41, is a native of the Anco district. He lives with Nancy Berrocal, 26, and from this relationship has 2 children: Annie, 4, and Rebeca,1. They all live together in their own home in the community of Santa Rosa in the department of Ayacucho. Aurelio is a hardworking man who strives to provide his family with prosperity. He is a farmer who has 4 hectares of land where he cultivates coca leaves, cocoa and coffee. He has worked for 13 years, and states that he still enjoys this work, since he can work independently. During the harvest season he hires workers to help him harvest the cocoa and coca leaves, products that are purchased by the wholesale companies that give him good profits.
