I first came across John Scharffenberger at the end of the last century. John trained has an talents, winemaking, anthropology and plantsman. He started business as a winemaker, in the Napa Valley and produced an excellent sparkling white Champenoise wine. This business was bought by one of the French Champagne houses and give John the opportunity to explore another passion: Chocolate. With Robert Steinberg they created Scharffen Berger Chocolates, which was the first artisan bean to bar chocolate maker in the States. It was these two who gave so much support and encouragement to our great friends a colleagues at the Grenada Chocolate Company when they were starting out a couple of years later. The company has been bought by Hersheys but continues to make small scale artisan chocolate, while adding to Hershey’s ethical portfolio. John is a fascinating person and I strongly recommend coming to this event if you are interested in the world of chocolates making.
