Annie in ApeThe British chocolate company which currently only has shops in London’s exclusive Belgravia, Chelsea and Marylebone, opened its doors as a concession within the luxury hotel on Monday.

The new venture has created four full and part time jobs with manager Annie McNicholl at the helm. It’s a welcome return for Annie who’s worked at The Chester Grosvenor on and off for more than a decade. Annie, 46, from Chester, said:

“It’s nice to be back at The Chester Grosvenor and to be part of this exciting new concession. I can’t wait to introduce Chester to Rococo.”

Chocolate lovers will be able to take part in special chocolate tasting sessions held at the concession after hours and Rococo chocolate will be featuring in gourmet lunches and dinners held in the Michelin-starred restaurant ‘Simon Radley at The Chester Grosvenor’.

The new La Brasserie menu features treats for chocolate lovers with a special Rococo ‘chocolatte’, made with Rococo cocoa and hot milk, and a ‘chocolate shot’ made with 70% dark chocolate cocoa and water to create the chocolate equivalent of an espresso.

The new chocolatier is part of an ambitious project which has seen the much-loved La Brasserie undergo a multi-million pound refurbishment and reconfiguration to allow the concession to open for business at the front of the restaurant on Eastgate.

This spring, Mott Green, founder of the Grenada Chocolate Company, a Grenada-based tree-to-bar organic chocolate cooperative, will set out on a pioneering voyage to become the first chocolate maker to ship a mass quantity of chocolate sustainably. Green has teamed up with Netherlands-based shipping company FairTransport to ship five tons of the organic dark chocolate from Grenada to New York City; Portsmouth, England; and Amsterdam on the trade wind-powered sailing vessel Brigantine Tres Hombres. The voyage, taking place this March and April, marks the first ever carbon-neutral trans-Atlantic mass chocolate delivery.

Green, a former New Yorker who moved to Grenada in 1988 and founded the Grenada Chocolate Company in 1999, has built his own insulated cool room, powered solely by wind and sun, for the ship’s cargo hold. He will store five tons of his dark chocolate bars in the cool room and sail on the Tres Hombres as one of ten trainees, monitoring the cooling system throughout the trip.

The Brigantine Tres Hombres is a 32 meter, 165 ton brigantine square-rigged sailboat that can hold up to 30 tons of cargo. The boat has no engine and follows the trade winds across the Atlantic. The crew of five is due to pick up Green and his chocolate from Grenada in early March 2012 and deliver the first batch of chocolate to New York City’s Hudson River Park Pier 25 in early April (the exact date of arrival will depend on the trade winds).

Green was busy getting ready to pack five tons of his organic dark chocolate and sail with it from Grenada to New York City. He’d partnered with Netherlands-based shipping company, FairTransport, and the ship, the wind-powered Brigantine Tres Hombres, was set to sail from Grenada with Green and his chocolate today. This voyage, according to Green, is the “first carbon-neutral trans-Atlantic mass chocolate delivery.” Green built his own insulated cool room, powered solely by wind and sun, for the ship’s cargo hold. The Grenada Chocolate Company (tree-to-bar being the rare case they control the complete process from planting the cacao trees to wrapping the chocolate bars…), is about to extend it’s eco-friendly credentials by transporting the chocolate from shrore to shore.

Mott Green, founder of the company and passionate chocolate maker had a dream to transport his chocolate ‘carbon neutral’ from the tropics to markets in the US and Europe. By teaming up with the Dutch shipping company Fair Transport, which is sailing the world on wind energy, this dream is becoming reality as we speak, and we will NOW be documenting the FIRST EVER Fair Transport of chocolate…

Early March 5 tons of this world renown chocolate will sail away from Grenada to New York, London and Amsterdam on the trade wind-powered sailing vessel Brigantine Tres Hombres.

An old fashioned story about getting on a sailing ship, arriving weeks before and having to wait weeks before you can start sailing… Charlie, a British friend of Mott, came to Grenada to sail across the world on the Tres Hombres to be part of the first Fair Transport of chocolate.

But Charlie is fortunate, being able to wait in the Chocolate factory and we’ve asked him about his upcoming experience and the thrill to wait for this ship and to be on board as they will sail the world. And of course about the Grenada chocolate…

‘Its not until you’re here that you actually begin to understand the level of achievement and the level of commitment of everyone to establish this new endeavour to create the best chocolate in the world’
