Move over Lewis Hamilton. Jenson Button – it’s time to retire. A new king of the road is crossing the UK from Monday 17 May at a bone shaking top speed of …..20 mph. With just three wheels and 50 cc, this Piaggio ‘Ape’ (Italian for bee) will be the first chocolate delivery van to buzz all the way from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
The tuk-tuk style car has never done more than 20 miles in a week before, being only used for occasional deliveries. At the helm with some padded cushions will be James Booth (49), Director of Rococo chocolates who has created this adventure inspired by a 1996 journey of 7mph by lawnmower. “I saw Stuart Boreham who has severe cerebral palsy speak at an event and tell his tale that made me want to get out of my comfort zone. Stuart has agreed to accompany me as support team, so I will be able to rely on his previous experience. But I will be driving solo all the way, trying not to let my thoughts get drowned out by the noise of the engine.”
The Ape (pronounced – app-ay) journey will be kick started by serial celebrity journey junkie, Charlie (“The Long Way Down”) Boorman who’s supporting the challenge. The journey begins on Monday 17 May and James hopes to complete it by Saturday 22, raising £30,000 in aid of three charities.
