While many household brands have deserted the capital for larger premises outside the M25 (Sarson’s vinegar; Hartley’s jam; Peek Frean’s biscuits: OXQ stock cubes; Young’s beer), a new band of local producers has emerged of late and is growing rapidly. Small scale, independent, often refugees from City jobs, and always passionate about using the best ingredients, they can be found selling their wares at fanners’ markets and local delis before graduating to the foodhalls of institutions such as Harrods and Selfridges. and even on to sandwich chains and supermarkets.
