Walking past Rococo Chocolates on Marylebone High Street, I noticed a chocolate doll in the window. I’m not sure if it was made of chocolate or an actual doll dipped in chocolate, but there it was, a little girl with curly hair was posed on a chair. It was kind of cute, but kind of creepy at the same time. Eating the chocolate doll would almost feel a little like cannibalism.
At what point are confections just too cute to eat? Waitrose already has cakes shaped like Father Christmas. If you go down to Chinatown, bakeries will have cakes shaped like a panda or mouse or pig (incidentally, these cakes are mostly frosting and aren’t meant to be eaten so much as they are meant to be thrown at people). Decorative, yes, but I feel a little guilty eating something I would otherwise fawn over.
